About Renee picture.png

Renée Edwards

I'm a creative leader who loves making films and media which give voice, inspiration and connection by highlighting those who are realizing their own dreams whilst supporting and leading others with their expertise.

British born, in the Midlands, I was raised in Leicester, and then Brighton by the sea. As well as a large Anglo-Irish maternal family, I'm half African American. I came to make London my home having declared the move at five years old after a trip to see the Christmas lights. Here I studied a degree in Photography, Film and TV at the London College of Printing (LCP), now the London College of Communication as part of the University of the Arts.

I produced and directed a multi-award-winning feature documentary film starring musicians and their supporters, One Note at a Time, about the recovery of the music scene in my father's home town of New Orleans.

This directorial debut was initiated to support the city following the flooding after Hurricane Katrina. I immersed myself in a precious live music scene, making lifelong connections within the New Orleans cultural community. They continue to share unique personals stories through me.

With immediate family on either side of the pond, travelling started in early childhood to the USA. I have enjoyed frequent or extensive visits to USA, India, Australia, Canada, France, Germany and Thailand. I have visited and worked in other countries including Holland, Spain, Italy, Northern Ireland, Sweden, Singapore, Portugal, Greece, Russia, Qatar, Barbados and Mustique.

As a child I found my comfort in books and artistic pursuits. This is reflected in the human interest documentaries I direct and is embodied within the Magic Wanda the Dragon® children's concept.

Being a mother, and seeing first hand what is on offer to children, I am dedicated to producing children's media which encourages a positive outlook to children.

This concept is built on my childhood experiences, training in film, TV and the Arts, and combined with my experience of being a mother. It also embodies my passion for self development and mentoring, my understanding of a child's psychological and physical development, and a vision I hold for what is possible when art and technology are combined.

We have carried out research and development with children, teachers, families and those dedicated to child development. I have written books which we have read to hundreds of children, and led art workshops based on the themes. We have also worked with experts in animation, augmented reality, merchandising and music.

I realized in my early career that I wanted to make films which people would want to re-watch, and which ideally would enrich their lives in some way.

After studying at LCP, I successfully produced corporate films for three years. Following this I became the first full time (computer software driven) nonlinear film editor in the UK, and was headhunted to work with the leading, now industry standard, editing software company, Avid Technology, in their first London office.

This led to my prolific broadcast editing career in all genres, focusing mainly on current affairs documentaries and culminating in my current role as Executive Chair of BFE - British Film Editors. I'm also Ginkgo Music Charity, which raises money through music projects to save the Ecuadorian Rainforest.

This rounded career in film and TV has led to the creation of the production company NightSky Pictures. Along with talented professionals, I have come to know during my career, I'm committed making a difference in areas of life that matter to me and the team, through our output.

I have trained extensively in High Performance methods, Team Management & Leadership and Marketing.

I voted for the Bafta Awards for 16 years specializing in the animation, documentary and editing categories.
